I'm just back in from refilling all of our birdfeeders, as people aren't the only ones getting ready for the incoming blizzard! It is very cold out; we've just hit 20 degrees now.
The humidity is 49%.
The barometer is at 29.91 and rising still.
Clear blue skies.
The falls right now are frozen, 'though there is still water flowing under the ice.
And should you wish to get a bit of woodwork in before the snows, we have our stalwart group of volunteers outside right now, working on signs. They'll be here til noon (and we have the coffee on), so do come by for a bit if you can!

Changing Weather
Conditions at the Lodge at Cascading Waters as of 8:20 a.m.:
28.85" of Hg pressure and steady (registering signs of stormy weather);
20.5 degrees F and steady;
59% humidity and steady;
The Cascading Brook is running at 4.4" (but the reading is approximate with ice frozen to the meter);
No wind is registering on the anemometer;
No precipitation in the last 24 hours;
The USFS Fire Danger Class is LOW;
The sky is partly clear with a blanket of high altitude clouds, and the sun is trying to burn its way through, and for the moment looks to be losing;
and the Cascades are icing over with water flowing as well.
The ground is definitely frozen out there!

Enjoy it while it's here
We seem to be between two storm fronts this morning: yesterday's violent wind and sudden downpours, with rain forecast for this afternoon again.
Right now, at 9 am, it is sunny, 68 and rising, dry air, light wind
Barometer is at 29.00 and steady under clear blue skies
With the wind, the trails have dried out fast.
We've been told that there are some limbs down on various Cascades trails due to the wind yesterday and over the weekend. If you can give us a specific location (GPS is great, but even just a general description is a help) for anything you see, that would be helpful. Thanks!

Brrr...continues
The human barometers of the family can already feel the storm coming, 'though the actual barometer here is 29.15 inches of mercury and steady under bright sunny skies.
It remains frigid--20 degrees at 9 am--and looks to stay that way for much of the week.
The Cascades are an ice pile (pretty!); the brook is frozen along the edges, but still running through the center of the brook.
Fire danger is LOW.

Cold day to vote!
We're posting a bit late today, as we took a bit of the morning to walk down to the polls. Cold out there today!
(Go vote, anyway!)
The cold means that Cook's Pond is starting to get a coat of ice; it's a bit bigger every morning. As it looks like we have only a slight chance of getting above freezing for any length of time this week, that will only continue. Most of the snow we got over the weekend has stuck around, except in the spots that get a lot of sun.
The stream this morning, which is still running briskly, is at 5 inches even.
The barometer (at noon) is at 29.47 and rising; that will change over the course of the afternoon, as we've got a storm coming in.
Current temperature here is just 40, with a bit of a breeze. It was 30 when I check this morning at 7 am.
Snow coming in tonight, through tomorrow lunchtime: could add up to several inches. Best chance of a snow day we've had so far this year!

Double post
Sorry; we're keeping records, but we aren't getting them up!
THURSDAY, 2/26:
34 degrees and rising
70% humidity and rising
30.21 inches of mercury and steady at 9 am
Cold with little wind
We saw our first mountain biker in quite some time today!
FRIDAY, 2/27:
At 9:42 it was 42 degrees and steady (though we did see it reach nearly 50 here today!)
98% humidity and steady (that was without any rain, which started much later in the day)
30.00 inches of mercury and falling (storm out in the Ohio River Valley)
Overcast skies and quite a bit of wind, increasing over the course of the day.
Fire danger is LOW
As of 8:30 it is 48 degrees and steady
96 % humidity and rising
Barometer stands at 29.80 and steady
Rain started around 7:30 here and so far we have 0.04 inches
If it stays this warm, we should be able to get a stream reading over the weekend.

Bring in your wood
We're pulling in more firewood now, as that nor'easter is coming up the coast!
At 9 am, it is 33 degrees and rising
54% humidity and steady
Barometer stands at 29.94 inches of mercury and steady
Cloudy skies
Fire danger has now moved up to MEDIUM
This morning we had a woman come out from the state to walk the property under consideration for state grant funds. We were joined by representatives of the White Oak Land Trust and the West Boylston Land Trust, as the 53 acres of KinneyWood, should the money come through and the project move forward, will connect property in four towns.

Splitting wood
Much to the consternation of the chickadees who were obviously hoping for a peaceful breakfast, we were out this morning and split some wood. We're starting a fire up this afternoon and may keep it going all night. You're not going to find US unprepared if the power goes out again!
At 9:30 am, it is 23 degrees and rising under sunny skies
Humidity is at 73% and steady (just for fun, if you have a way to check, compare this with your interior humidity. Here's it's 23% inside, and that's with a pot boiling on the stove.)
29.97 inches of mercury and steady (so far...check out that radar map on the bottom of the GWLT page if you want to see what's coming)
The stream is at 5.8 inches (up pretty substantially from yesterday)
Fire danger is LOW
Stay warm!

Last clear day
It looks as though Hurricane Hanna is headed our way, so if you want to spend some (dry) time outdoors, squeeze it in today! The streambed is nearly dry, and we are trying to avoid the painful sight of the Cook's Pond mudflats, so we'll welcome the rain here!
At 9 am, it is 71 degrees and rising
93% humidity and falling (sun's up)
30.06 inches of mercury, holding steady so far

Storm coming in today
The barometer is falling this morning and the animals outside are busy. A storm is coming in this afternoon.
The temperature outside is 25 degrees. Humidity is 64% this morning.
There's cloud cover already.
The snow remains crunchy this morning. Depending on what the precipitation falls as this afternoon, the trails may not be in great condition later. Get your hike in now!
12:20pm
The ice has started, and then stopped.
There are millions of tiny balls of ice all over the universe.
Other than being kinda nifty and kinda cool it isn't much of a big deal as yet.
Perhaps when it starts back up again it will amount to something.
30 degrees F
78% humidity and rising
30.27" mercury and falling.
as it has been all ice the rain gauge remains silent.
So far no problem for hiking.
