While we have had mostly sunny weather, there's been just enough rain here and there to keep the fire danger LOW (we do check, and know that the sign hasn't changed in months!). Not having a rainy fall thus far, though, means that we do not have a Cascade so much as a pile of rocks. It's lovely to walk through the woods in the fall; just don't expect a waterfall right now!
At 9 am, it is 51.5 degrees and rising. (That's a ten degree rise since dawn.)
The humidity is at 94% and steady (thus, the fire danger continues LOW).
The barometer is at 29.32 inches of mercury and steady, under clear blue skies.
Yesterday traditionally was celebrated as the feast of Michaelmas, recognized as when you'd really want to buckle down and get ready for the winter. We've seen our birch and beech trees start to turn yellow; most of our maples haven't done much more than start their color change yet. The squirrels and chipmunks have picked up their tempo. The woodland aster is well in bloom and starting to fade. Our apple tree has been busy for weeks (green very tart apples).
Enjoy the fall!

Post-Irene calm
Certainly the post-storm calm out there this morning!
At 7:30 am, it is 58.3 degrees and steady, rather chilly actually.
84% humidity
29.06 inches of pressure and rising.
In total, we had 3.66 inches of rain during the storm.
We avoided most damage up here in the Lodge. We've got several sizable trees down: one across the driveway, one across the trail, one behind the shed.
We are asking all hikers and walkers to please report in with downed trees or blocked trails.
We need to know what trail, and where/about how far in.

If you can try to classify what is bowsawable (up to 10" or so) and what is chainsawable (=or > 12") that would be great. Many thanks!

More rain
We had more rain come in overnight. Added to that from the end of last week--we recorded 2.4 inches on Friday alone--we may well have a stream here for awhile. Fall generally is the rainy season in New England, and last week and this appear to be bearing that out.
We just managed at noon to struggle above 50 degrees--we're now hitting 54 at 2 pm--so it is chilly!
The barometer is at 29.38 inches and steady.
Cloudy (though not currently raining) skies
Needless to say, all the rain has knocked down leaves. We've got plenty of beech and hickory leaves down here. The maples are just starting to turn.

Brrr...
I hope you didn't put all of your fleece away; you're going to need it today!
At 9 am, it is 45 degrees and rising.
VERY breezy (so, yes, it does feel colder)
The barometer is at 29.29 and steady under clear skies
The stream is up a bit from the weekend's rain, to 4.8 inches (and that water is COLD this morning!).

Sunny and chilly
Not as lovely as yesterday (which we enjoyed on the Hull ferry in Boston Harbor), but still quite lovely for December 4!
At 9 am it is 40 degrees and rising
The barometer stands at 29.29 inches of mercury and rising
Skies are clear and blue
The stream is up to 6 inches even, still full of runoff from Tuesday's rain.
Still no birds at the feeder.

Clear day
Nice clear cold day out there this morning. Frost on the ground and the windshields.
At 9 am it is 39 degrees and rising (slowly).
Barometer stands at 29.38 and steady.
The stream is at 4.8 inches.
We finally got one of our birdfeeders out yesterday; we'll see if the birds remember us!

Golden day
The light is golden under the leaves today...beautiful out there right now!
It is COLD, though, so wrap up! While we did not have a frost here at the Lodge (the trees are good insulation), there was one out on Olean Street. It is definitely fall!
At 9 am, it is right at 40 degrees and rising (but not much and not fast)
The barometer is at 29.41 inches and steady under blue skies.
The stream stands at 3.2 inches from yesterday's rain.
We've got some activity next door at the proposed development today; it looks like they're moving logs around.

Getting chillier
You'll want a sweater if you head out on the trails this morning. It's refreshing, but surprising!
At 9:05 it is 47 degrees and rising
78% humidity and steady
29.97 inches of mercury and steady
a light wind under sunny skies
Fire danger is LOW across Massachusetts to the Berkshires now.
Yesterday's rain was so little as to not register on our meter; I'm not sure how much rain we have to have for it to count.

Chilly
At 9 am, it is 53 degrees and heading up
94% humidity and steady (not warm enough to drop yet)
Barometer is steady at 30.00 inches (keeping those high skies)
No rain yesterday or this morning
Fire danger remains LOW
Brook is still running from the rain earlier in the week.
UPDATE: A morning hike on the Holden Trail revealed the damage done by the dirtbike/ATV crew (all were spoken to yesterday; we're assured that's the end of it) this past week. It's of course been wet, which means mud, which is fun if you're on a dirtbike and don't care that the slope will entirely wash away the next time it rains.
We'd did some trail blocking (you won't get through on wheels without work), but we'll need to go back in to do some erosion control. If you want to help, you know how to get in touch! We'll always welcome extra hands.
Also, the leaves are just thinking about changing; you'll find a maple here and there. The ditch is running with water. We also noticed the succession of white pine along the edges of that end of Cataract Street. It doesn't take the pines long to notice that a space isn't being used!

School buses are rolling...
Did you notice all of them out there practicing yesterday?
A bit chilly this morning!
At 9 am, it is 57 degrees
78% humidity
Barometer is steady at 29.91 inches
Fire danger remains LOW
We never got any of that rain to speak of yesterday. Here's hoping the fish hold out!
The excavator next door fired up at 7 am today and has been busy. There's a rumor going through the neighborhood that they don't intend to build out the property, perhaps only building a few of the houses for family. We'll see...
