The Cascades are running, the trails are muddy (still icy in spots, particularly on the Silver Spring Trail), and full of dogs (or so we're told).

Lovely!

It's a lovely Sunday afternoon out there; we just had a group including at least three dogs, one child in a backpack, and several adults head up the trail. The trails are SLICK, however, as yesterday's melting all froze last night! Proceed with care!
At 2 pm, it is SUNNY and breezy, just hitting 40 degrees.
The barometer is steady at 28.97.
The Cascades are trickling through the snow.

Bundle up!

An intrepid dog walker just came by, bundled up as far as possible. You'll need it today. The temperature at 9:30 am is 12, but with the windchill, we're well below zero.

The Cascades are still running a bit through the snow that came down yesterday, but they're freezing fast!
The snow cover has largely taken care of the icy spots on the trails for now.

Brook is freezing!

I think Monday's post will be the last brook measure for awhile; when we checked this morning, it was frozen hard enough to walk on, right at 4 inches. It isn't frozen all the way across (it usually doesn't), but it is frozen well around the edges!
And the Cascades look like a big snowpile.

At 9am it was 18 degrees and rising, barely.

We aren't seeing too much trail activity beyond dog walkers. It is COLD.
It doesn't appear to have slowed down the juncos, sparrows, chickadees, mourning doves, and blue jays, however!

Rainy fall

We're having some highly seasonal fall rain here today. Who says New England doesn't have a wet season?
This brings the stream back up to 2.6 inches, and we'll expect that to go higher as the 400 acres behind us drains downstream. As you'll see from the photo below, we've got at least one downstream neighbor who will be enjoying the water!

Trail report in today

We just had a visit from one of our intrepid summer interns who was out on the trails checking things over. Aside from a sudden trash appearance at the north end of the Cascades trail (any chance you guys down the street to get to that?) and the omnipresence of...evidence of dogs, things look pretty good. We have not yet gotten to the River Trail; we're planning a work project on that.

It isn't clear if if the runner that just went through was running to keep up with his dogs or to keep warm!
The interns were here for their second night;we're hoping they were warmer last night than the night before! They'll be moving off to their summer (undisclosed) location tomorrow.

The hikers, the dogs, the bicycles keep going by. It's a bit overcast now, as some cloud cover moves through, but it isn't supposed to amount to much, so enjoy the time outside!

Get out and move!

We took a short hike on the Holden Trail this morning. We ran into two dogs (and an owner) out for a hike in the sun, as well. It looks as though the Newton Trail has already seen plenty of traffic today (two and four footed) this morning. The woodpeckers were out (we only saw black-capped ones), as were sparrows. As long as you keep moving, you can stay fairly warm, 'though it make take awhile to feel your feet again!

Brutally cold

It's what we would call "brutal" out there this morning. It's been very slow on the trail; even our faithful dog walkers seem to be taking a pass today.

Overnight, the Cascades froze. There is, as there almost always is, water trickling under the ice, but it's a sheet of ice. We lucked out that it was flowing when the freeze came; it's very pretty!

The snow over the weekend was so little as to be immeasurable as precipitation.

We had some dog walkers go through this morning, but that has been it. Even if you don't want to hike, you might come down and stick your feet in the brook. The junior rangers recommend it.

Summer prep

We are planning a remote outpost here at the Cascades for the summer, so some groundwork on that went on today. If you want to use your muscles on our behalf, plan on being here at Cascading Waters on June 18 at 5:30 to move the tent platform up to its summer home!

The storm just blew over us last night. We got no measurable rain from what looked fairly impressive on the map.
